Don't Forget Your Pets
When you're developing an emergency plan for your home and family, don't forget to plan for your pets. A good pet plan starts before the disaster. Have a current picture. Make sure your pet's vaccinations are up to date and know where the records are. They may be necessary if your pet has to go to a pet shelter. Have a collar with ID tag and leash handy. During the disaster, bring your pets indoors well in advance of the storm - reassure them and remain calm.
After the disaster, walk your pet on a leash until they become re-acquainted to their home. Often, familiar scents and landmarks may be altered and pets could become confused and get lost. Also, downed power lines, predators, and other debris washed in by high water can all pose a threat to animals after a disaster. If pets cannot be found, contact the local shelters. Have a picture of your pet handy.
Be prepared by having a Pet Disaster Supply Kit containing proper identification including vaccination records; an ample supply of food and water; a carrier or cage; medications; muzzle, collar or leash.
